Senator Chris Murphy Speaks On Travel Ban

Immigration Ban: Democratic Senators to Introduce Bills Overturning Trump

Additionally, in an email alert to subscribers, US Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) spoke about the recent travel ban handed down by the President (click here to access Senator Murphy’s website):

Like many of you, I was horrified to read the stories of people being detained and turned around at airports across the country as a result of President Trump’s illegal “Muslim ban.”

My heart broke for the families fleeing violence and terror who were set to arrive in the United States this week only to have those plans dashed by an unconscionable abandonment of our founding principles.

But then I saw the crowds begin to gather at JFK Airport in New York City. And Logan in Boston. O’Hare in Chicago. Bradley in Hartford, Connecticut. LAX, IAD, ATL, PHX SFO, and many others. I was inspired by photos on Twitter of lawyers volunteering their time in airport restaurants. And then we won legal battles in New York, Boston, and Virginia. And in some places, people who had been held up were let through customs.

And the response this weekend made one thing clear to me: there is no anger or anxiety that you feel that cannot be cured by political action. This week, I am going to do my part to act as well.

This week, I am going to introduce legislation to immediately overturn Donald Trump’s dangerous and hateful executive order. I want you to add your name as a citizen co-sponsor and then forward this email to your friends and ask them to do the same.

Add your name as a citizen co-sponsor of my legislation overturning Donald Trump’s illegal Muslim ban that flies in the face of America’s founding principles.

As I said in my Huffington Post piece earlier this week, we are a nation founded by religious refugees. Over and over we have opened our doors to those fleeing war and terror. We have it within our power to protect ourselves from terror and to rescue our neighbors from terror.

And we must do both.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy

Milford Speaks Out Inauguration Rally Recap

Milford, Connecticut – As President Donald Trump was being sworn in during inauguration ceremonies in Washington, D.C. Friday, a group of primarily Democrats rallied on the steps of Milford City Hall for what one member called an “anti-inaugural rally.”

Speakers with the group Milford Speaks Out argued for causes and ideals that they believe will be compromised under a Trump administration, from environmental issues to women’s rights to affordable health care.

Speakers included some of Milford’s stand-out environmentalists, like Jeanne Cervin, a former member of the Planning and Zoning Board, and Barbara Milton, former director of the Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center.

Alderman Frank Smith told the crowd that he had hoped Jan. 20 would be a day he would celebrate the first woman president of the United States.

“Because of what we have heard and the trepidation we go into this new administration with, it is important that we all gather together,” Smith said.

The message on the steps of City Hall was that people need to fight for issues that are important to them. Milton said people can make a difference themselves in terms of the environment, by recycling, using less water and paying attention to energy and environmental laws. Elizabeth Wright said people need to continue to support public education.

Senator Chris Murphy speaks with Connecticut residents about the Affordable Care Act

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut — As Republicans threaten to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Senator Chris Murphy stopped in New Haven Wednesday to talk with people about the law. He heard from people who have benefited from it….

The fear is that if the law is repealed, young adults will not be able to stay on their parents’ plans. There is also a concern that women may be charged more for their plans than men. Many with preexisting conditions are worried too….Murphy has been speaking out about the need to protect and defend the Affordable Care Act. He believes repealing it would be disastrous. He says though it has been good for millions of people, it isn’t perfect.

“We should be working on fixing it, making it better – not repealing it and going back to the time when there were 20 million people without insurance in this country,” Murphy said.

Mayor Ben Blake Announces Milford’s Triple AAA Bond Rating

Milford, Connecticut – Triple AAA Bond Rating Announcement

PREMIER RATING AGENCY, FITCH, AWARDS HIGHEST CREDIT GRADE

Milford, Connecticut [Press Release] – Mayor Ben Blake announced that the nation’s premier rating agency, Fitch, upgraded Milford’s bond rating to ‘AAA,’ the highest possible credit grade a City can receive.

As a result of smart financial decisions and responsible management, Milford joins an elite group of municipalities, which includes Greenwich, Darien, and New Canaan in receiving the top-credit rating. This credit score demonstrates the City’s fiscal health and reveals how markets view Milford’s creditworthiness. More importantly, this notable evaluation exposes the City’s strong and growing economy.

Fitch’s rating recognizes that through strategic decisions and purposeful planning, Milford has cultivated its economic development and is now benefiting from a renaissance that’s unique in the State of Connecticut. “We’ve seen a 26% increase in companies moving to Milford over the past two years,” said Mayor Blake. “This explosion of new business growth has expanded our Grand List and helped us deliver this year’s historic tax cut which reduced taxes for all City residents and businesses.”

“This top credit rating is a testament to our conservative approach to budgets,” said Finance Director Peter Erodici. “I am very pleased with the progress the City has made to reach this superior level of fiscal responsibility.”

In assigning its highest level of credit quality, Fitch cited Milford’s strong management under Mayor Blake’s leadership and the City’s “sound financial cushion on the basis of its superior level of budgetary flexibility and history of careful financial management.” Moreover, the agency noted Milford’s “continued solid economic and revenue growth prospects, a low long-term liability burden and strong operating performance.” According to Fitch, the AAA rating was based on superior financial management, healthy reserves, low debt levels, well-funded retiree costs, and a history of successful access to the municipal bond market. Fitch also commended the City for its careful management of other post employment benefit liabilities.

“The AAA rating reflects Milford’s strong government, rocketing economy and remarkable community,” said Mayor Blake. “We will continue to exercise careful planning and prudent financial management to allow our City to thrive.”
