Mayor Blake and his office are collaborating with Jonathan Law High School staff this year in commemorating the victims of 9/11. Jonathan Law High School has planned a school-wide 9/11 Day of Remembrance, Reflection and Community Service. It will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11th at the football field at Jonathan Law High School. The community is invited.

Below is a letter from Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Feser, providing background information leading up to this commemoration:

As all of you know, this week we commemorate those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. In Milford, our grade 6-12 social studies teachers will be implementing a 9/11 Curriculum beginning this week. It is a curriculum tied to the September 11, 2001 attack on the U.S., an event that has had a significant impact on the global community and on the lives of countless Americans. This curriculum was created by a group of our middle and high school social studies teachers. Their mission in developing this curriculum is:

To educate students in a meaningful approach that will highlight the historical significance of 9/11, and dissolve stereotypes and ignorance through enlightened education that encourages students to be pillars of the future in order to make a positive impact in a post 9/11 world.

Our teachers received support and guidance from experts at the Tribute Center in New York City, one of the nation’s leaders in 9/11 education. Given that more than half of our currently enrolled students were born after 9/11, we feel it is important for our children to understand the significance of this event, to learn from it, and to commit to building a better world. The curriculum was created with much thought and care. The units are age-appropriate and complement current grade level curricula.
My hope is that you will support this curriculum implementation and engage with your children around their learning. If you have questions about the curriculum, you can contact our Instructional Supervisor for Social Studies, Dr. Ralph Barbiero at RBarbiero@milforded.org.

Lastly, we thought you would like to know that the Mayor and his office are collaborating with Jonathan Law High School staff this year in commemorating the victims of 9/11.
