Barack Obama and Joe Biden just made their first public appearance as running mates at a rally in Springfield, Illinois. They are the leaders who will bring the change our country needs. But they can't do it alone.

Milford Students receive Rosa DeLauro Scholarship

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) gives 50 local students a $1,000 scholarship each year. She offers two different scholarships, one in the name of her father Ted DeLauro, a former New Haven Aldermen who was passionate about education and community service. The other is in the name of Maria Baez Perez a former staffer from Puerto Rico who passed away at age 33. This scholarship is for students who are first generation U.S. citizens or immigrants. The scholarships are fully funded from Congresswoman DeLauro’s congressional pay raises and cost of living increases. This year there were four students from Milford who received a scholarship.

Senator Hillary Clinton and Presumptive Democratic Presidential Nominee Senator Barack Obama have agreed to allow a traditional roll call vote at the convention for Senator Clinton. Sen. Obama wants to recognize Sen. Clinton for her efforts in the primary, being the first female in history to vie for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Both Clinton and Obama believe that this will help unite the party after a rather divisive primary. ''I am convinced that honoring Senator Clinton's historic campaign in this way will help us celebrate this defining moment in our history and bring the party together in a strong united fashion,'' said Sen. Obama. ''With every voice heard and the party strongly united, we will elect Senator Obama president of the United States and put our nation on the path to peace and prosperity once again.'' Sen. Clinton added.

Milford Democrats Unanimously Endorse Jim Amann for Governor

Speaker Jim Amann attended the July 31st Milford Democratic Town Committee meeting formally requesting the endorsement of the Milford Democrats, the resolution passed unanimously. Proudly sporting an Obama button Speaker Amann spoke about his thoughts on the upcoming 2008 election, his views on health care, and education funding. The Milford Democrats endorsement is one of many recent endorsements received by the Speaker of the House in his bid for Governor in 2010.

Jim Amann has been endorsed for Governor by ex-Governor - Governor Eugene Xavier Gatling (a.k.a. James Noble). Governor Gatling is best remembered because of his sharp-tongued butler, Benson DuBois. Always the cut-up, the Governor denied ever being a real Governor, but said "I played one on TV." Very funny your honor!

The endorsement occurred at the Glennon residence (Una and Sheila). Other dignitaries were also in attendance - too many to mention.

On July 7, the Milford Board of Aldermen approved a resolution aimed at reducing energy rates in the State. As of this date four other towns and cities have enacted the resolution; West Haven, Hamden, New Haven, and North Haven.

As gas prices continue to soar, Gov. M. Jodi Rell encouraged residents not to give up their summer vacation, but instead spend their vacation time here in Connecticut on a "Staycation."

[from the Hartford] Courant, last week:

Republican State Chairman Chris Healy defended [Gov. Rell's] absence, saying she was out of state on a long-planned vacation with relatives. [Gov. Rell's relatives live in Virginia.]
