The Golden Rule vs. Survival of the Fittest

There is a great deal at stake in the 2010 election. Bottom line, it comes down to what are our core values as Americans? What kind of people do we want governing us?

Americans are angry, frightened and overwhelmed. People have to dig for news and facts and when they don't know who to believe, many don't believe anyone or in anything. And they don't vote.

Kids are Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs

Really! Cocoa Puffs make kids act nuts!

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) says food dyes pose a number of risks to the American public and is calling on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban three of the most commonly used dyes: Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. A new CSPI report says those dyes contain known carcinogens and contaminants that unnecessarily increase the risks of cancer, hyperactivity in children and allergic reactions.

"These synthetic chemicals do absolutely nothing to improve the nutritional quality or safety of foods, but trigger behavior problems in children and, possibly, cancer in anybody," said CSPI executive director Michael Jacobson, co-author of the report. "The Food and Drug Administration should ban dyes, which would force industry to color foods with real food ingredients, not toxic petrochemicals."

The FDA has not read the report yet an agency spokesperson said. "We appreciate the report from CSPI and look forward to reviewing it. We take our commitment to protecting children seriously."

Republicans Cannot Hide from Their Decisions

Letter to the Editor of the Milford Mirror
Reader: School decision was certainly political
To the Editor:
I was disappointed when the K-2, 3-5 elementary school restructuring plan was passed by the Board of Education. I had concerns about the plan itself; but what was most upsetting was the way the plan was rolled out to the public at the last minute, with little opportunity for public input, most of which was ignored by the board anyways. Change can be good for everyone, when the change is planned well in advance and rolled out in a methodical way with input from everyone involved, but this change was too much, too fast, with everyone feeling like it was a done deal by the time the plan was announced.
