The speakers will be John D. Calandrelli from Connecticut Sierra Club, and Jon Gorham, president of Green Media Ventures.

The first installment of the October 1, 2009 Grand List Tax Bills is due on July 1, 2010. If the installment is not paid on or before August 2, 2010, it is subject to interest at the statutory rate of 1.5 percent per month, calculated from July 1, 2010 or a $2.00 minimum, whichever is greater. All bills $200.00 or less are due in full July 1, 2010. This applies to REAL ESTATE TAXES/SEWER SERVICES FEES, MOTOR VEHICLE TAXES AND PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES. Anyone who purchased property since October 1, 2009 or who has recently paid off a mortgage and does not have a bill should call the tax office at 203-783- 3217 so that a bill can be sent to him or her. Mail the correct bill coupon with payment to Tax Collector, PO Box 3025, Milford, CT 06460. If paying in person, bring ALL COPIES of the bill(s) to Tax Collector, 70 West River St., Milford, CT. I read of a movement to recall a Republican member of the Board of Education for his vote to close Simon Lake School. I understand that parents and supporters of education alike are frustrated, disappointed and disillusioned with their elected officials and have nowhere else to turn. Still, the decision to hastily close a school and reconfigure the entire education system without any real understanding of its impact to children, parents, our community or the quality of education is not Mr. White's alone.

We wish the new Assistant City Attorney the best of luck and offer one bit of unsolicited advice; speak in soft and measured tones lest you too will be fired. We also look forward to having an attorney on the city payroll that actually does Legal work for the City. To the best of our knowlege our current City Attorney, a political appointment whose part time salary in over $73,000, curiously does not seem to do any actual Legal work. We have yet to find his name listed as the attorney of record in any court appearance on behalf of the city. It also seems he doesn't do labor law, which is a majority of the city's legal business and which our former city attorney did do. Instead it now all gets contracted out to external law firms at significant additional cost to the city.

Republicans Raise Taxes - Again

Last year, the Democratic lead Board of Aldermen cut taxes for the first time ever in the history of the city.

Not even one year back in power the Republican's have managed to reach back into our pockets again. The Board of Aldermen voted 10 to 5, on party lines, to increase property taxes by 3.3%. All attempts by Democrats to lower certain line-items were rebuffed by the Republican majority. Mayor Richetelli's proposed budget remained virtually untouched. No one on the city side will be laid off and there are actually two new positions.

This was not the case for the school budget. The Republican's cut the school budget proposal by $2.2 million. Acting Superintendent Micheal Cummings said he will have to lay off 45 teachers and close one school.

Some of the more choice items still in the city side budget are:

A new $95,000 per year DPLU Director
A $12,000 way-finding study
One new police officer (there are currently 5 unfilled cop positions.)
$70,000 to the Fine Arts Council.

Did anyone really think this would be a "independent" Board of Aldermen? This bunch are nothing but rubber stamps for Richetelli.

Good Afternoon,

I would like to thank the Legislative Action Committee and the Chamber of Commerce for, once again, sponsoring this event and for giving me the opportunity to deliver this "State of the City" address - to recap the past year in Milford, to offer my thoughts about the future, and to take some of your questions.
